What to expect in couples counseling

As a Gottman Trained Therapist, I lead all couples through a four-session assessment process. The first session is together, then we split into individual sessions, and then we come back together for the fourth session.

This initial assessment can predict, with 94% accuracy, whether a couple is headed to a breakdown. By identifying harmful patterns, we can work to interrupt harm in the relationship and put you and your partner on the path to healing.

There are many reasons to consider couples counseling.

Grimaldo Counseling offers evidence-based couples counseling in San Antonio, as well as virtual couples therapy throughout Texas, to help you work past these issues and improve your relationship.

For Individuals

Overcome Trauma for Better Mental Health

PTSD and trauma are issues that spill over into every area of our lives. Trauma is often the root cause of everything from addiction to strained relationships. In an attempt to manage anxiety, depression, or uncomfortable feelings associated with trauma, we use short-term strategies to help us get by. But long term, these strategies aren’t usually helpful, and they can leave you feeling empty and isolated.

Why Take Advantage of Individual Counseling?

  • Overcome trauma with processing therapy
  • Improve your mental health
  • Understand yourself
  • Strengthen relationships
  • Become resilient

Compulsively avoiding situations, isolating yourself, or outrunning anxiety and depression won’t work. These habits create a vicious cycle that prevents you from overcoming trauma and moving on with your life.

As a counselor in San Antonio, I specialize in working with people who suffer from trauma and addiction. Together, you and I will identify limiting beliefs, past hurts and present behaviors that keep you from reaching your goals in life.

Find Clarity with a Trusted Counselor

I believe that being a counselor is a calling. I love helping people, and I’m passionate about the work that I do. Outside of work, I do my best to build an intentional life not only for myself and my family, but also to bring these lived experiences to the table for my clients.

How Our Counseling Services Work

Therapy helps you see what you might struggle to see on your own. However, you need to be ready to talk about what’s in your way to become the best, healthiest version of yourself.

As a licensed therapist based in San Antonio, I use evidence-based counseling services rooted in science to help couples and individuals heal. Through our work together, you’ll gain a better understanding of your relationship and yourself, as well as tangible strategies to help you cope and grow.

While I customize treatment for every client’s needs, you can expect to go through this three-step process in therapy.

Where do you see yourself in the future? By defining the life you want for yourself, we can create a clear goal for your treatment. Together, we’ll do counseling identity work and identify the values that matter most to you. We’ll use this information to create a customized treatment plan to address your unique mental health struggles.

Next, we’ll look at any barriers that are standing in the way of your growth. Whether that’s past trauma, addiction, or attachment issues, past experiences often create barriers that prevent you from progressing in the present. In this step, we’ll work on identifying your limiting beliefs, patterns of action, and past experiences that keep you from moving forward.

Finally, we’ll work together to create an effective action plan to help you become more fulfilled in life. I’ll support you and provide the tools you need to gain the skills required to heal from the past while effectively engaging in the present.

Treatment Modalities for Our Services

Your experiences and needs are unique, which is why I use a variety of science-backed counseling approaches to help you find resolution and healing. I offer these treatments either in-person at our San Antonio office or virtually.

Trauma can unexpectedly block you in the present and prevent you from living your best life. Combined with other counseling modalities, EMDR can help you process the complex memories and feelings behind PTSD, depression, anxiety, and panic disorders.

Gottman Method

If you struggle to have a conversation with your partner without someone raising their voice or saying hurtful words, the Gottman Method can help the two of you communicate honestly without the hurt.

With EFT, we look at your relationship through the lens of adult attachment. This means we look at both partners’ personalities, attachment styles, and behaviors in intimate relationships. We analyze your social bonds and look at your emotional regulation strategies as a way to change the relationship you have with both yourself and your partner.

With ACT, we use strategies like values clarification, mindfulness, and acceptance to help you overcome negative thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors. By focusing on your values first, you can become more mentally resilient and lead a more fulfilling life.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of counseling that identifies and changes negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to your mental health issues. Through CBT, you’ll learn how to challenge and reframe negative thoughts.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is a type of therapy that teaches you coping skills for managing difficult emotions. While CBT focuses on redirecting patterns of thought, DBT focuses on making changes in your behavioral health.

Interpersonal Neurobiology

Interpersonal Neurobiology is an interdisciplinary approach that draws on neuroscience and psychology to study how the brain affects our social relationships. This approach emphasizes the importance of healthy relationships for your well-being, and explores how these social connections shape your brain’s function.

Attachment Science

Attachment Science is a therapy approach that explores your early childhood experiences to see how childhood attachments shaped the development of your brain. This can help you better understand how to regulate your emotions and relate to the people around you.
